Mackenzie McCarty is a Monitor editorial intern and a 2023 graduate of the University of Missouri with a bachelor's degree in Journalism and a minor in Spanish. She spent a semester abroad in Alicante, Spain, living with a host family. This increased her Spanish skills as well as her interest in international news. Before joining the Monitor, Mackenzie wrote for the Missourian, a local newspaper in Columbia, Missouri. She was the lead reporter on the marijuana beat as Missouri rolled out legalization laws. She also spent the past summer working at a camp in Maine, teaching kids on a rock-climbing wall and high-ropes course.
Mackenzie joined the Monitor because she believes in the values-focused approach to journalism and the emphasis on solutions and positivity that is so evident in Monitor stories. She hopes to build her reporting and writing skills and expand her worldview during her time as an intern.
